Topic : Evolution of CALL

There are 3 progression of CALL that is  BEHAVIOURISTIC CALL, COMMUNICATIVE CALL and INTEGRATED CALL.

1) Behaviouristic CALL

  • Developed in 1960s based on behaviourist learning theory.
  • Primarily used for Audio-Lingual Method
  • Programmed Instruction involves repetitive drill and practice (teacher's aid)
  • Aimed - Transfer textbooks & worksheets to computer based learning.
    • Advantages :    
          • Repetition is good for the learners
          • Immediate feedback for the learners
          • Learn according to the students level
          • Efficient record keeping
    2) Communicative CALL
    • Developed between 1970s - 1980s
    • Focus - Language more than perfect grammar.
    • Creates environment where the usage of language becomes natural.
    • Allows students to generate their own understanding
    3) Integrated CALL
    • Integration of real-wold materials into CALL.
    • The usage of CD-ROMs to store large amounts of media that can be used as materials.
    • Became popular with the development of high speed internet and widely accessible hypermedia.(extension of hypertext consist of texts, audio and graphical media. interactive & non-interactive media)
    4) The Internet and CALL

    • Advances through the influence of internet and communication information.
    • For variety of purpose.
    • Role of English language.
    • Learners are not only recipients but also communicators and creators.
    5) Computer Mediated Communication
    • 2-way communication
    • Students directly communicate with other speakers & learners of the language.
    • Asynchronous
    • Synchronous

    Today is the continuing topic for the Computer Asissted Language Learning a.k.a CALL . We have communicative CALL, integrated CALL, The internet CALL and Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)  it serves a different purpose. You can find the details in the post here. For me CALL is quite difficult to understand and needs a lot of attention. It needs further attention to be studied for. CALL can be helpful for the people because it changes with technology. As technology improves, CALL also improves.
