Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)
Any form of communication or interaction between 2 or more people via separate computers through network connection.
Any communication patterns mediated through a computer.
CMC In Education
As for today we will focus on CMC that is computer mediated communication. CMC is Any form of communication or interaction between 2 or more people via separate computers through network connection. We have asynchronous CMC,synchronous CMC,CMC and long distance learning and Collaborative learning. You guys can check it out in the entry for this week. CMC also have its advantages and disadvantages. As for advantages, they will not be distance barrier, make collaborations much easier and as for the disadvantages are for the people who have access to technology. Other than that, it will make the user lack of real human contact.

Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)

CMC In Education
- Late 1980s and 1990s with the introduction of Communicative CALL.
- Widespread with the use of Email and Forums.
- Internet Chat Rooms in the mid 1990s allowed direct communications
- For long-distance teaching/learningIncrease in popularity of e-tutoring through forums and video conferencing.
Asynchronous CMC
- Communication is not synchronised
- Messages are not exchanged and replied immediately
- E-mails, most social media, internet forums and message boards,blogs.
Synchronous CMC
- Communication between participants is synchronized.
- Messages can be exchanged and replied immediately.
- Allows for direct communication.
- Internet chat rooms, messenger, video/audio conferencing.
CMC and Long Distanced Learning
- Late 2000s, CMC was implemented for distance learning.
- Synchronous communications allows teachers & learners to interact without being in the same location.
- Video Conferencing and E-tutoring
- E-lectures also become popular
- Short courses over the internet.
Collaborative Learning
- Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning
- Computers can help enhance peer interactions and group work.
- Collaborative production of works and problem solving.
- Google Doc, Google Drive, Blogs and messenger.
Authentic Communication
- CMC offers learners easy access and opportunity to communicate with other learners as well as native speakers.
- Context and material of communication is authentic rather than simulated.
Advantages
- No distance barrier
- Mitigates time as a barrier
- Make collaborations much easier
- Social influences and detriments are reduced or eliminated.
Disadvantages
- Inhibitions related to the use of technology
- Problems with access to technology
- Lack of socio-emotional and nonverbal cues
- Lack of real human contact
